PROS AND CONS OF VIDEO GAMES
Nowadays, video game addictions become so frequent that many youths do not find it an issue to devote their time into the hands of these devilish pits of entrapment. In addition, many of the “youngsters”, fond to their name, are extremely active in such areas such that their life can never leave keyboards and monitors. Parents are cited to be exasperated at the pervasiveness of these video or computer games, and have yet not ceased to complain about the incessant addiction. But, video games actually bring pros and cons to the us.
Spending an increasing amount of time on video games can significantly reduce physical activity in children and teenagers, thereby increasing the risk of obesity among them. Besides obesity, other health related issues associated with playing video games include video-induced seizures, muscular and skeletal disorders and nerve compression.
Violence and aggression depicted in video games, if practiced in the real world, can cause serious injuries and even death. It is believed that excessive video game playing may reduce a child's empathy or his/her willingness and desire to help others. Besides, excessive playing of video games can have an adverse impact on the academic performance of a child. It can also result in social isolation, as children tend to spend less and less time playing and interacting with family members and friends. Another important harmful effect of video games is that it can affect a child's perceptions about gender roles, as women are often portrayed as the victim or the weaker person, in many of these games.
In yet another negative effect of video game is the involvement that comes with this entertainment joint. Most kids who take part in video games get their minds carried away by the games. The concentration on the video games has resulted to some children even forgetting their responsibilities and other important activities such as singing, skating among others. What exists in their life is nothing else but video games. In some cases, children have even forgotten doing their assignments at the expense of video games.
Playing video games demands an interactive involvement of the players. As a player, you start identifying with some character in the game and act for it. This excited state of mind has a positive effect on the player. It is also said that playing video games is surely better than watching television as video games are interactive.
Another very important positive effect of video games seen in children in the improvement in their hand-eye coordination. A player has to watch on screen while simultaneously operating the joystick of the device in his/her hand to make moves. This requires the player to be alert and well coordinated. Moreover, he/she can see his actions taking effect immediately, thus getting a first hand experience of his/her actions taking effect.
Playing video games involves problem solving, planning, estimation and analysis of the moves or actions of both you and your opponent. This affects the player positively by developing in him/her problem-solving skills, analytical and estimation skills and quick decision-making.
As a conclusion, each individual has their own right and risk to choose the best way to full use of their leisure time. it is very dependent on the way they spent on each activities. If they are too addicted to an activities no matter it is a video games or the volunteering activities, it might affect their other performance as well. Young people should bear in mind that all these activities is just used to filling up their leisure time and not as an important event that must be done. There is no harm playing video games if the individuals do not abuse this technology provided to them. Lastly, it will back to each individual to think of what is necessary to be done and what is not necessary to be done.
