Playing Video Games: Good or Bad?
In this new age, many people are explored to sophisticated things like 3G handphones, laptops and Global Positioning System (GPS). Similarly, playing video games is a quite common activity among people nowadays. However, there are some people who misuse the form of this entertainment. Consequently, people especially students will have their academic performance deteriorated. So, I will stand for my points that playing video games is bad for anyone.
Nowadays, a large number of children and teens are playing increasingly violent games. Normally, most youth can recognise the difference between reality and fantasy, so they see the games as pointless entertainment. Nevertheless, some get immersed in the violence, which may lead them to a cold-hearted view of other people. It may make them prone to aggressive thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Therefore, they will probably make social problems like kidnap, rape and robbery. So, their potential future of becoming successful people will be vanished at once.
Apart from this, time spent on video games is likely to affect one’s academics. Clearly, too much time on any video entertainment takes away from time spent on school work. It is because a video gamer is mostly unable to control his addiction to the usual game he plays. Once he gets immersed in it, he will definitely forget the time for his rest, recreational activities and homework. Consequently, the results of his academics will become very ‘ugly’. Therefore, playing video games has more cons than pros.
Besides this, in the research, almost 60 percent of frequent video gamers play with friends. 33% of them play with siblings and 25 percent play with spouses or parents. There are also games specially designed for a single player. However, most people are single players. Therefore, they have sparingly social interactions with the society. In other words, they can be socially isolated. It is bad for anyone.
Nevertheless, researchers from McGill University’s Department of Psychology have created and tested computer games that are specifically designed to help people enhance their self-acceptance. Some games that aren’t specifically designed to do so can still help kids feel a sense of achievement, based simply on the basic principles involved in what makes a good game. Through discovery, players learn to succeed in ways that some researchers say our brains actually prefer. Most games are designed to introduce a concept, after that players will have an opportunity to master it. Players are free to explore and utilise and achieve success with this new skill, growing in self-confidence all the while.
In a nutshell, playing video games has more disadvantages than advantages. It can be dangerous if some people misuse the form of entertainment.
